Psychotherapy
and Counselling

What is Psychotherapy and Counselling?

We often use the analogy of walking through an unknown forest to describe the therapeutic process. As a client, you are walking through an unfamiliar forest. You see that there are many paths, but they are dark, and you feel unsure of which path works best for you. This forest may represent your current problems, overwhelming emotions, or past trauma. A therapist, in this analogy, would be those handy tools that can help you safely choose a path and exit the forest, like a flashlight or a map. A therapist will offer you safety so you can feel free to express your emotions, thoughts and beliefs without judgment. Therapy is a space where you can learn to understand yourself better and learn skills to cope with your problems. It is also a place that can help you process things that you feel you want to move on from. From this analogy, we can gather that therapy is a collaborative process. It is a place where the therapist and the client work together to make a plan that works to create an individualized treatment for you. The goal of a therapist is for their clients to feel empowered and in control of their lives through providing guidance and support.

Approaches Offered

Our approach is holistic, strength-based and collaborative - we work with the client to heal the whole person, taking into account mental, physical and social factors rather than just the symptoms of the illness. The benefit of holistic healing is that it can reduce the chances of relapse. It helps clients apply the coping skills and stress reduction skills they learn to all parts of their lives.

We offer various modalities, drawing mainly from training in Trauma-Informed and Mindfulness-Based approaches. In addition, our staff has training in Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical-Behavioural Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, and more.
